From My Pieced Alphbet

Kingsland

Quilters are used to working with square blocks. However, it isn't always easy to make square letters look good - not impossible, but certainly not easy.

The letters, and numbers, for the Kingsland alphabet are constructed on a 10 x 10 grid. So the block is square.

A heavy shadow to the right of each letter, and of course each number, keeps them from being square and makes them easier to design so that they look familiar and not distorted.

The shadows make letter spacing easier because all the letters, and numbers as well, can butt up against each other and still be readable.

Having shadows means that a larger than normal number of pieces are required to piece the letters, and ,as you no doubt know by  now, numbers too.

However, the actual piecing is not difficult. It's all straight seams and 45 degree connector corners. It just takes a little longer to do because of the extra seams.
