Paired Blocks #11

Drunkard's Path & Snowball

Starting with these two blocks, Snowball and Drunkard's path, I want to see what motifs I can create by combining them.

Quilting

Sawtooth Star

This quilt top is one of the ones that I designed by modifying a Sawtooth Star. You can find it in my 31 October 2010 post.

My wife liked it enough to sew it. Now I have to design quilting for it.

Borders

Unnamed Block from 4-Patch Units

I think this wall hanging from 21 December 2010 could be improved by adding a border.

Each of these 2 motifs is made using Nine Patch and Drunkard's Path blocks.

Blocks

Unnamed Block from 4-Patch Units

Using 2 colors, there are 6 possible 4-Patch unit combinations.
What if I use nine 4-Patch units to make a block?

I've made the block symetrical about a diagonal axis.

Paired Blocks #8

Drunkard's Path & Snail's Trail

Yesterday I played with this motif made from Drunkard's Path blocks and Snail's Trail blocks. I am going to play with it again today to see what else I can come up with.

Paired Blocks #7

Drunkard's Path & Snail's Trail

This motif is made from Drunkard's Path blocks and Snail's Trail blocks. It is one of the ones I posted on 11 December 2010. I want to see if I can develop it further.

Colors

Wonky Clay's Choice

By changing the grid dimensions on a Clay's Choice block, I can create a Wonky Clay's Choice block.

What sort of patterns can I create when I change the way I color a Wonky Clay's Choice block?

Paired Blocks #6

Nine Patch & Drunkard's Path

Paired Blocks #5

Nine Patch & Drunkard's Path

These 2 motifs are made using only Nine Patch blocks and Drunkard's Path blocks.
What if I combine them?

Borders

On Point Oh Susannah

I've been fiddling with this since 10 November 2010. I like the central motif but I'm still looking for a border that will set it off.

Colors

Clay's Choice

Two days ago I experimented with tones. I colored Clay's Choice blocks in various shades of gray and then assembled the blocks to create designs.  Now I want to see what some of those designs look like in color.

Paired Blocks #4

Drunkard's Path & Snail's Trail

What if I mix Drunkard's Path blocks with Snail's Trail blocks? What kind of motifs can I design?

Friday, December 10, 2010

Colors

Clay's Choice

I read somewhere that color gets all the glory and tone does all the work. (I wish I could remember where so that I could attribute the quote.)

I've decided to play with different tones to see how they affect the patterns I create using a Clay's Choice block.

Applique

Tear Drop Quilt

Once upon a time, 21 September 2010 to be exact, I decided this border was too heavy for this center. I abandoned the border and went looking for one that was more in scale with the center.

But, what if I abandon the center and go looking for one that is more in keeping with the scale of the border?

These 2 motifs are made using only Nine Patch blocks and Drunkard's Path blocks.

Piecing

Yesterday I showed you this lettering and complained that it was inconsistant and therefore badly designed in terms of appearance.

Today I'm going to show you how it was pieced and complain about that too.

Monday, December 6, 2010

I found the first USA in a quilt magazine some years ago. It was part of a patriotic quilt.

It is inconsistent. The U is bottom heavy. The S is Fat. The A is top heavy and feels short. All three letters could be from different alphabets.

Nine Patch & Drunkard's Path

This quilt top design was made using only Nine Patch blocks and Drunkard's Path blocks. I'm going to experiment with ways of coloring it.

Quilting

Unnamed

This quilt top design from 2 days ago needs quilting designed for it.

Paired Blocks #2

Nine Patch & Drunkard's Path

I thought it might be interesting to mix Nine Patch blocks with Drunkard's Path blocks. I am going to play with that idea and see what sort of motifs I can develop. Some other day I'll try designing quilts from those motifs.

Borders

Unnamed

Two days ago (30 November 2010) I created this quilt top design. Today it gets borders.

Tessellation

This tessellation comes from a recent post (27 November 2010). It needs more color than just blue and white.

Blocks

Unnamed

The other day (27 November 2010) I used this simple block as the basis of a tessellation. Today I want to try using it differently.

Borders

On Point Oh Susannah

I'm still looking for some way to finish this image. I want to do something besides just adding plain borders.

Tessellation

Starting with these 2 simple blocks which are the reverse of each other, I want to try to create a tessellation.
What if I try combining 2 of each rotated to make a larger block?

Miscellaneous Quilts

The other day, while designing a quilt, by mistake I hit the "invert color" key on my computer and was delighted with the result. Since then I've tried inverting the colors of my more recent designs. Here are some of the results.

Hexagonal Blocks Quilt

Two days ago I created this hexagonal block quilt. I've tidied up the border since then and now I need to decide how to quilt it.

Quilting

Log Cabin Placemat

Three days ago (17 November 2010) I was playing with Log Cabin placemats and made this with the intention that it would be completed by the quilting.

Hexagonal Block Quilt

I was working with this hexagonal blocks quilt from my 11 November 2010 post when I accidentally hit "invert color."

Log Cabin Placemat

I want to make a placemat using Log Cabin blocks.

What if, instead of square, I make my blocks rectangular and use 3 of them to make a placemat?

Quilting

Hexagonal Blocks Quilt

When it comes time to quilt my designs I'm always tempted to take the easy way out and stitch-in-the-ditch or stipple. This design from my 11 November 2010 post needs something else.

Saturday, November 13, 2010

Borders

Snail's Trail

Borders can mean a lot to a quilt. This Snail's Trail design from my 9 November 2010 post could use borders.

Quilting

Sawtooth Star

For me, the hardest part of designing a quilt is designing the quilting. However, this design from my 30 October 2010 post needs quilting; so here I go.

Hexagonal Blocks

Starting with this ring made of hexagons, what kind of quilt top can I concoct?
